Boost Control & LDR PID

N75 operation, the LDR PID chain, and recalibrating a stiffer wastegate.

In this page

In turbocharged 1.8T 20V applications, charge pressure regulation is handled by the LDR (Ladedruckregelung) subsystem. Rather than controlling boost purely via closed-loop feedback (which would introduce severe lag, hunting, and overshoots), Bosch ME7.5 combines a feedforward open-loop pre-control table (KFLDRL) with an adaptive closed-loop Proportional-Integral-Differential (PID) controller.

When an engineer installs an upgraded turbocharger (such as a K04-001) or replaces the factory wastegate actuator with an adjustable billet unit equipped with a stiffer spring, failure to recalibrate the LDR parameters results in severe boost spikes, cyclic surging, and limp mode via DTC P1556 / 17964 (Charge Pressure Negative Deviation) or P1557 / 17965 (Charge Pressure Positive Deviation Limit Exceeded).

17.1. Mechanical & Electrical Operation of the N75 Wastegate Solenoid

  • Solenoid Type: High-frequency, pulse-width modulated pneumatic 3-port valve (N75 on Pin 104 / Pin 105).
    • The N75 vents pressure away from the actuator canister back into the Turbo Inlet Pipe (TIP).
    • The actuator canister sees atmospheric pressure (0 psi relative), forcing the internal spring to hold the wastegate flap shut for maximum boost build.
  • Default Electrical State (0% Duty Cycle / De-energized):
  • Energized State (100% Duty Cycle):

17.2. The Core LDR Calibration Parameters (06A906032LP)

  1. KFLDRL (Linearization of Boost Pressure Duty Cycle):
    • Address: 0x01EBEE (8x8 grid).
    • Role: Disables the I-controller when boost error Δ P is very small, stabilizing steady-state highway cruising.
  2. KFLDIMX (Maximum Dynamic I-Regulator Limit):
  3. LDRQ0, LDRQ1, LDRQ2 (PID Controller Constants):
  4. KFLDRQ (Integral Deactivation Threshold):

17.3. Recalibration Procedure for Stiffer Wastegate Actuators & K04 Upgrades

When upgrading from the factory 4.5 psi actuator to a stiffer 10 psi or 14 psi actuator (or when running a K04-001 hybrid turbo), the pneumatic gain of the wastegate is doubled: a 10% change in N75 duty cycle produces twice as much boost variation.

Step-by-Step Recalibration Protocol

  1. Reduce KFLDRL Feedforward Duty Cycle:
    • Raise LDRXN and LDRXNZ (Static and Gear-Dependent Engine Load Limits at 0x01F054 and 0x01F08A) to match the new mechanical capability (e.g. 190… 220% load for 1.4… 1.6 bar relative boost).
    • Raise KFLDHBN (Maximum Diagnostic Boost Limit at 0x01EE82) to 2500 hPa (or higher with a 3-bar MAP sensor) to prevent overboost cutoff.
  2. Lower KFLDIMX Ceiling:
  3. Dampen the Proportional Gain (LDRQ0):
  4. Synchronize Static Boost Ceilings:
